Shannon and her team have finally moved in to their permanent housing. She has started her scheduled rotation and will be working days, 12hr shifts 2 days on and 2 days off with a night rotation every 4 weeks. Shannon now has access to the internet and has a skype account.
Along with a few Afghan nationals Shannon has treated her first US casualties. She told us about a great program they take part in called "Quilts of Valor". Quilts of Valor is an organization started in 2003 by a Blue Star Mom (a mom with a child deployed). Volunteers make quilts for wounded troops and send them to medical facilities both in the US and abroad to say "thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor while standing in harm's way for our country". It is a patriotic quilt that comes with a small scrapbook with photos of the quilt being made. The medical personnel at each facility where the soldier receives care all sign the quilt and it is sent with him wherever his is transported. She said many of them will not remember being in those first care hospitals, and even if they don't get a chance to enjoy the quilt at least their families can have it and see all the effort and care they received. To date there have been 26,125 quilts gifted. Shannon said "while I think my time here will be tough I am happy to be here helping out".
